Ready for an easy afternoon cruising through the beautiful moss-covered islands and bays of the OBX without leaving your home? Our friend Ray McAllister is here to take you on a little getaway.
About the Books:
HATTERAS ISLAND: Keeper of the Outer Banks shares the history, people and continuing allure of the remote island that has come to symbolize the Outer Banks. Here are stories of the famed lighthouse, the Lost Colony, Blackbeard and fellow pirates, German U-boat attacks, and both the first transmission of music and the receipt of the Titanic’s distress call. Here are shipwrecks and hurricanes, the national seashore and Highway 12, the charming villages and the hardy people, and vacationers who love this island. Hatteras is, as the author says, “a conversation with an island.”
The new 2nd edition adds stories of the new bridge to Hatteras, brutal hurricanes, the short-lived Shelly Island, and more. It also includes a new author preface and updating afterword, additional photographs, and a foreword by renowned author Philip Gerard. Hatteras is the winner of the North Carolina Association of Historian’s Willie Parker Peace History Book Award and the Readers Favorite Award. It is available in signed hardcover and paperback editions, as well as eBook and audio book formats.
UNCLE JACK’S OUTER BANKS: The Ultimate Collection, by award-winning OBX humorist Jack Sandberg, features more than 50 of the long-time humor columnist’s laugh-filled essays and letters, plus more than 20 cartoons. Author Ray McAllister has added an introduction on the importance of Sandberg’s more than three decades of writing. Long the funniest and savviest and savviest commentator on North Carolina's beloved Outer Banks, "Uncle Jack" Sandberg is shown to best effect with this ultimate collection of his hilarious—and on-the-mark—observations, supplemented by the work of great cartoonists.
Sandberg dispenses stories, advice, criticism, annoyance, warnings, insight, and always laughs, about this narrow strand of islands that has become one of America's premier vacationlands. From Corolla to Hatteras Island, with stops at Manteo, his beloved South Nags Head, and all spots in-between, Uncle Jack does indeed own the Outer Banks.
Uncle Jack's Outer Banks is the perfect gift or memento for anyone who loves the Outer Banks or just likes to laugh. It is, as Uncle Jack understates, "a pretty funny book."
About the Authors:
Jack Sandberg wrote a weekly "Uncle Jack" column of humor and commentary for first the Outer Banks Current and then the Outer Banks Sentinel during much of the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. A Wisconsin native who taught at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Sandberg visited North Carolina's Outer Banks in 1969, then moved there 10 years later. He remained for 40 years.
