A note from Fountain Bookstore owner Kelly Justice to Martin Clark fans old and new:
I first befriended Martin Clark in 2000, the same year I came to Fountain. I fell in love with his first book The Many Aspects of Mobile Home Living that was released that year and it became a bestseller for us and gained praise from many others including this starred review from Publishers Weekly. It went on to become a national bestseller. Martin has only gotten better in the last two decades and has produced his finest work yet in The Substitution Order.
The Substitution Order is the tale of a small-town Southern lawyer who has done some bad things which have resulted in a busted marriage, a job at a low-class sandwich shop, and an ankle monitor. While making amends and trying to put his past behind him, he is cast as a fall guy in a real estate con and is facing hard time and the loss of what little money, freedom, and dignity he had left.
Just as funny as his earlier novels, with time Clark's writing has gained a newfound depth while expanding its unique brand of dirty grace. I found myself laughing out loud on one page only to turn to the next and have to put the book down for a moment for fear my heart might break from a sad and perfect truth plainly and perfectly told. I am deeply honored to be part of bringing The Substitution Order to the world and to introduce Martin to a new generation of readers who might not have heard of him before.
I can't wait to share this story. It's the best feeling a bookseller can have and I'm deeply grateful for it.
