Kelly

Kelly bought The Fountain in January 2008 after managing it since 2000 and she has been a professional independent bookseller since 1989.

She's an omnivore of a reader, rarely refusing to at least try reading any category of book. Unfortunately, we also suspect she eats them.

I sat next to Sandra Gutierrez recently at a luncheon and when she started talking it was like somebody turned on a gigantic light bulb over my head. Latin American and American Southern cuisine are basically the same. Who knew?!? Think about it...your basic ingredients are all the same: tomatoes, corn (and corn meal), seafood, cheeses. How did I never see this before?!? Well, the book is a culinary landmark and the author was delightful.

Jamie Oliver’s Meals in Minutes - If you’ve never tried a Jamie Oliver cookbook, this would be a great place to start. His infectious joy for life and food bubbles off of every page. Who wouldn’t want to try “Oozy Mushroom Risotto” or “Seriously Good Fish Tagine”. This cookbook is set up so you cook the whole meal (usually items plus a drink or dessert) at the same time. If that does not appeal to you, you might try an earlier cookbook of Jamie’s like his first, The Naked Chef.

Is there anything Michael Chabon can't do? There are not words for how awesome The Astonishing Secret of Awesome Man is. I'm not sure how one makes a book that is equal parts warm and whacked, but it's been done. Can you guess his secret identity? Bright, retro art from illustrator Jake Parker makes Awesome Man fly off the page. I'm ready for the next adventure. I hope there is a sequel.

Imagine if Cormac McCarthy's The Road was written for teens. OK...maybe that's not such a good visual. This post-apocalyptic road novel had me on the edge of my seat. It is a thoughtful reflection on life after the end of the world. Kids that are teens now have no memory of what the world used to be...they only know survival. As human beings attempt to rebuild the world they destroyed, will they be doomed to repeat past mistakes or will the next generation save the future? Great writing...great book to read with your kids. Autographed copies in stock now!

Just don't come up behind me suddenly, ok? I'm a little edgy since reading this book.

Jon Ronson explores the madness industry with intelligence, humor and his own personal blend of paranoia.  How many amongst us are psychopaths?  How many of those are in positions of power?  Is psychopathy even easily defined?

Go behind the scenes with this investigative jounalist to the halls of medicine, the ward of the asylum, the violent wing of prison, and, of course, to Wall Street.  WARNING: Reading this book will make you see them everywhere...not that they aren't everywhere because they are.

Pete's actually been out for a bit, but I've never featured him.  And I feel like he's a good cat for a day like today.

Pete the Cat goes walking down the street wearing his brand new white shoes. Along the way, his shoes change from white to red to blue to brown to WET as we steps in piles of strawberries, blueberries and other big messes! But no matter what color his shoes are are, Pete keeps movin' and groovin' and singing his song...

"No matter what you step in, keep walking along and singing your song...because it's all good"

Now that's a message we can all use!
