Howdy!
I've been cooking all morning.
If you're wondering where zombies come from, I can tell you: they emerge fully formed at Kroger at 6:00a.m. If I ever decide to film a horror movie, that's where I'm going to start.
So, drop by and sample some recipes from the Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker cookbooks...favorites among the staff.
It's pretty much football food, a hot dip, a Mexican casserole, a slow cooker lasagne. All meat free! (not what you usually think of when you drag out the crock pot...usually just a slab of animal protein, some root vegetables and a pack of onion soup mix...we're here to save you from that horror).
If you've got problems with cheese...I'd skip today's event though. Between today's dishes and our booksellers' senses of humor, you'll not stand a chance.
Cheers,
Kelly

There are not enough words in English to express how much I love this book. Before page 10, I felt like someone had dropped me off the side of a cliff into a raging river of rapids and I just had to ride it until its shocking end. Serena is one of the best villain characters I've ever read.
Rash has been compared to Steinbeck and Cormac McCarthy by The New Yorker, Garcia Marquez by The Huffington Post. It is my personal project to sell at least a carton of these this month. Please come in and let me tell you more about it.
Set in the wilds of 1930's North Carolina, this meditation on greed, lust and corruption will leave you breathless.

Wow. What a weird book.
"All 16-year-old Cameron wants is to get through high school--and life
in general--with a minimum of effort. It's not a lot to ask. But that's
before he's given some bad news: he's sick and he's going to die. Which
totally sucks. Hope arrives in the winged form of Dulcie, a loopy punk
angel/possible hallucination with a bad sugar habit. She tells Cam
there is a cure--if he's willing to go in search of it. With the help
of a death-obsessed, video-gaming dwarf and a yard gnome, Cam sets off
on the mother of all road trips through a twisted America into the
heart of what matters most."
That's the publisher description. When I was reading it, I wasn't quite sure what kind of reading experience I was having. All I can say is I can't get it out of my mind. I read it weeks ago and I've been pretty affected by it. It's listed as a book for 14 and up, but there are lots of "content" issues if you're a parent looking to give this to a kid. I wholeheartedly recommend it for adults and mature teens.

Completing my obsessive reading on The Police (a habit I don't seem to have outgrown since my teens) is the new autobiography by Stewart Copeland. I'd already read the ones by Andy Summers and Sting.
The Police were interesting because of their chemistry. The tension between Stewart and Sting was a large part of that magic that made the band so great and the reason why they quit at the zenith.
Copeland is the only American in the group, its founder and the drummer. This reads like a book written by an arrogant American drummer.
He lost me a bit when he shared this: "I spend my summers buying horses in South America". Really?
Still, you know, I think he had a lot more fun than the other two and continues to do so. And there's a pleasure to reading about someone so talented who knows exactly how lucky he is.

I love Celia! She's been called the Southern female Dave Barry, but I think that's a little dismissive. She's her own thing.
This collection is worth the price for the essay on those jerks that insist on coming to work when they've got the equivalent of the plague (started their lives as those snotty little "perfect attendance" kids...and when I say snotty, that's exactly what I mean).
Celia will be in town in the Spring to sign. She's a riot to see live. I'll keep you posted!
