March 2010

Howdy!

Can't wait for Spring, like all of us at this point, I guess.

But before we get to "porch reading season", there are a few more weeks of "couch in front of fireplace reading season" left. (Or in my case, "bed next to space heater season").

Here are our latest suggestions as well as a heads up: order your tickets for Lee Smith on April 6th to make sure you get a seat for one of our favorite and most popular authors! We love Lee!

While you're at it, make sure you check out the side bar for an Upcoming Events season that is even shocking me and I booked them all. Wow.

Cheers!

Kelly

Now also in board book, we love this little story about a caveboy who isn't getting enough attention. While the grammar police may have qualms with his vocal stylings, kids will love him. The bright, simple art is very appealing to eyes of all ages.

From the authors of Made to Stick comes this new effort. People in general hate change. (And we in Richmond are especially resistant to it...let's be honest with ourselves, shall we?) Chip and Dan Heath detail what in our brains makes us this way and show us examples of everyday folks who have made the leap to real and lasting changes, from dieting to customer service.

Are you looking for another read like The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society? Look no further!

Edgecombe St. Mary, a small village in the English countryside is filled with rolling hills, thatched cottages, and contains a cast of characters both hilariously original and touchingly familiar. Their interactions are both hilarious and heartbreaking.

Brava, Valentine (Hardcover)

I think Valentine is my favorite Adriana character. Maybe it's because we have so much in common as small business owners, food lovers, and romantics.

Whatever the reason, I cannot get enough of this series. If you replaced custom shoes with books, this could be my life....except I haven't been to Italy. And, well, my family is considerably smaller, less-insane, and stays out of my business mostly. Um. Well. This review is falling apart a bit.

Anyway... Brava, Adriana for writing books that are many cuts above most books about the lives of women, whose characters are so real you feel like you know them as well as your own friends and family, who makes you want to drive to her house in New York so you can grab the manuscript for the next one to find out what happens next.

Wow. A great, reasonably-priced cookbook with all my favorite foods. And the recipes are converted to all under 350 calories. AND it's chock full of pictures of the smokin' hot chef Rocco Dispirito? Wake me up, I'm dreaming!

For those like me who would like to skip the actual raising of children and go right to the being a grandparent part (I'm settling for "auntie"), this is a lot of fun. Of course, if you chose the usual path to grandparenthood, this will be good for you too.

Illustrated with evocative photographs and the author's watercolors, this magical book shows how to do 130 activities that connect grandmothers and grandchildren through nature-in the kitchen, the garden, and the art room.
