Howdy!

Very happy month!

First off: an extremely exciting debut book from Ellen F. Brown!  Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind is getting rave reviews everywhere!!!!!  Her launch party will be at Page Bond Gallery on Friday, February 18.  Can't make it? Order an autographed copy here!  Ellen will  be appearing with her co-author John Wiley.

Ellen is a great friend to the store and this is such a wonderful book.  See the Booklady's Blog comments here.  Congratulations, Ellen!!!!!!!!

Announcing Tuesdays With Tolstoy!  Always meant to read War & Peace, but felt like you needed a support group?  We're here for you. (I haven't read it either). Part of a world-wide read-along.  Digest Tolstoy with your lunch (bring your own to the shop) over a year.  You can handle that, I promise.  Here is the translation we'll be using.  We have copies at the shop along with meeting schedules.

And there's some sort of holiday coming up...oh, yes. Valentine's Day!  We have chocolate for you &/or the object of your affections.  Lots of sweet books and a few snarky ones if you're just not feelin' it this year.  We also have a very large selection of Valentine's cards this year!!! Don't forget to pick up a sparkly libation to celebrate from River City Cellars!  We love them and we love you...and I'm not just saying that. Wait...don't run away!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Cheers!

This month's pick is, hands down, Ponyella!

Rebecca Joines Schinsky of The Book Lady's Blog is reading this one right now!  Look for her post soon.

Set in the fictional town of Port Bonita, on Washington State's rugged Pacific coast, "West of Here" is propelled by a story that both re-creates and celebrates the American experience. Harkening back to the work of such masters of Americana as Bret Harte, Edna Ferber, and Larry McMurtry, "West of Here" is a bold novel by a writer destined to become a major force in American literature.

Published by our wonderful friends at Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, this book is the number one Indiebound pick for February! Recommended by more indie booksellers than any other title.  I've got the audio on order for myself. Can't wait!

I love this series!  Move over Jack Reacher!  More explosions!  More sexual tension!  More macho dialogue!  More! More! More!  Kirkus review says: "Irresistible red meat for connoisseurs of action thrillers".  Rockin' right they are!

What happens if you . . .

. . . pair prosciutto with roasted pears?
. . . shave Parmesan on French fries?
. . . add pepper to a chocolate cake?
. . . pan-fry macaroni and cheese?

In "The Improvisational Cook," Sally Schneider helps home cooks declare their independence from recipes and set lists of ingredients by offering a fun, more spontaneous way to cook. The secret lies in understanding the internal "logic" of a recipe and its creative possibilities.

Here are the tools and insights everyone needs to find his or her own voice in the kitchen--from where to get inspiration, to learning "what goes with what," to pantry staples that make improvising easy.
